Upcoming RTS: Colony

Posted by Krinn Jul. 23, 2009 @ 5:55 AM EDT

Hi folks,

Recently I've been working on a new strategy game, wanting to try out a lot of new things, like AS3, and online multiplayer. So! The result of all of that is this new game (scheduled to be released on AG at the end of the month).

Here is the main news post:

These are some of the features:

Online Multiplayer
The game can support up to four players (in 2v2 format) but you can also play 1v1 or with/against CPUs. So you can choose whether you want to play co-operatively, competitively, or both This is all possible because of Jiggmin's BRILLIANT Blossom Server system. He's also been hard at work on the back end of this game as well to make everything runs fast and smoothly. Thanks Jiggmin! Any Flash develops who want to make online games, I recommend you look at Jiggmin's BlossomServer right away.

High Standards, Low Requirements
As3... rocks. By using it to render vector graphics into bitmap during runtime, we're able to maintain a low file-size (the game without sound is only about 900kB), but have great looking visuals with no lag at the same time. The game's highest settings even worked in a Multiplayer game on a computer with 500Mhz processor, and a 56k dial-up modem.

Random Music Generator
Instead of putting one big loop into the game, we've cut up the music into loads of little slices that fit together, so the system composes random and original music as you are playing, but it will still sound like one continuos track. I know it's not a new idea, but I can't believe that I didn't think of it before

Interactive AI
When you're playing on single player mode, you still need a strong partner to survive, so I've made you able to communicate to the AI. There are currently five AI personalities, and they all have different strategies and tactics in combat. You can talk to them via the chat, and ask them what they are going to build, or what you think they should do. They will let you know what the biggest threat from the enemy is, and if they are about to form an attack group. You can even ask them personal questions like their name and age

Unit Micro
This time you can actually command any units on the field. You can tell them to fall back, hold position, advance, or charge. There are many different kinds of units, some that do splash damage, some that fly, and some that regenerates its health. You can even have Meditecs behind the line healing your troops! You can even launch missiles from your base to take out a group of bunched up enemy units.

And now a small demo video :D

I jizzed. This looks awesome! I'm a huge RTS fan (played Warcraft III for 3-4 years, including it's expansion) so this is great news.

Good luck.

As3 rocks? I beg to differ

it looks exactly like crimson warfare, i didn't care for that game

Jul. 23, 2009 | 3:12 PM TheUnknownEntity says:

This does indeed look awesome, although like most, I am more excited for Sonny 3. However this is something to look forward to in the mean time

Jul. 23, 2009 | 4:34 PM Krinn responds:

By doing this, I've learnt a lot of stuff that I will use for Sonny 3, including AS3, bitmap graphics, and a multiplayer system! :D

That game looks awesome and the interactive AI is something I've always wanted in a game. Since their will be AI partners for people and theirs going to be multiplayer I would love to see the ability to make your own partner have their own custom portrait (if their will be portraits) fears and ways to react ("OH CRAP THAT TANK IS HUGE" and they'll pull their forces away at the site of a massive tank), way they talk, (as in them saying things like "them criminals are causin' a trouble") and strategy plans (if their out of their mind and will send troops to their death for attacks, or prefers to conserve troops and have them swarm the enemy)

Each person with their own personal partner that's always different from the rest I would play that game so much.

Jul. 23, 2009 | 10:44 PM angryglacier says:

Also if you would like I'll make a wiki of the game when it's finished I can make a http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Wikia page for it.

Jul. 24, 2009 | 3:02 AM Deadclever23 says:

It's good you finally caught up with AS3 because now Sonny 3 won't have to rape my processor like Sonny 2 did.

Good old 1.8Ghz single core.

What's so great about the Jiggmin server then?
I hear xgenstudio's MMOcha is pretty good.
And so is Nonoba's.
What makes Jiggmin's special?

Jul. 24, 2009 | 6:58 AM Krinn responds:

Well I haven't used the other ones, and it's possible that they are just as good, but here is why I love Jiggmin's system:

No strings attached, and he even lets people use it for free! We're still gonna pay him a license fee though, because he's helping us out a lot.

Plus his server is really fast and solid! As I said it's able to handle a real time strategy game even for 56k modems :D

It looks far to similar to Crimson Warfare for my comfort. I hated crimson for the whole, if you get close to the enemy base they pull thirty six units out of thier ass thing. Granted, If it helps you learn some new stuff for sonny 3, I'm all for it. One suggestion, please don't make the bonus stages requiring impossible to attain achievements. I didn't even try to get to stage seven in sonny two because you did that. People who actualy have other things they can do won't even try to get to that bonus stage. It may be possible to get to stage seven for the hardcore gamer who will find the most twinked out combonation, but it isn't for casual gamers who play for fun. Granted, its you whose making the game, but its me who's reviewing it.

Jul. 31, 2009 | 11:55 AM Krinn responds:

Hi,

It's very different to Crimson Warfare actually! It is out now on ArmorGames so you can play it if you want. The campaign is fairly short, only about 1-2 hours to beat max. Instead the game is more designed around multiplayer, so the sides are symmetrical.

Let me know what you think, and if you still hate it :D

Jul. 31, 2009 | 7:28 PM DemiGodofDark says:

I played it. It was okay. I couldn't get into it. The mulitplayer could have been handled better. Instead of splitting a base, giving them both a base would have worked far better. The AI was as useless as allways, and the enemy, instead of pulling fifty units outta thier ass, had a cannon that would destroy your units in one strike. It was an okay game, the graphics were great, the units were useful, though a lower build time would have been better, and the resource system worked. One thing that bothers me is the lack of a pause button in quickplay and campane, its something to consider if you bring back the time limit for turns on hard mode in sonny 3. I don't want to have to answer a call and die and have to restart a boss fight after all. Over all, I think some more time could have been spent on a hotseat multiplayer mode, in case some one has friends.

Is there going to be voice acting and a story mode??

Your by far the best game artist ive ever seen.. kudos with your life man you will go far

Aug. 3, 2009 | 12:37 AM AircraftCarrier says:

Although your game needs more tuning. I am glad that you have made a new game, other than those sequels. I am afraid that Sonny 3 will be worse than 2 or even 1 because 2 is already at the peak. In fact, I don't care sonny 3 anymore because I am tired of Sonny series. But sequel to Sinjid is always good because Sinjid needs a lot of improvements. Last but not least, I am glad that the forum is 'up' again!

Its ok...

Single player is far too short and far too easy imo, plus I dont really like being limited in my choices, 4 slots and 7 buildings is a little unfair.

Dont get me wrong its a GREAT game but, not your best.

Aug. 28, 2009 | 1:59 AM Kwing says:

Holy crap, you just replied to my thread!!

Oct. 2, 2009 | 1:10 AM HollowGrave says:

You made this? Holy crap I would never have guessed it. I was playing this the other day on AG and got instantly hooked. It's a epic game, man! Then again it's to be expected from you considering all your games are epic. Nice usage of the 'rock-paper-scissors' theory. It's much like starcraft, but instead of silly zergs it's badass dudes in mechs lol. The multiplayer mode was awesome :D Maybe Sonny 3 can be room based where the guests to the room follow the story from where the host is? :o Just a thought. I wish I could help in some way cause i've always wanted to help make a epic rpg even if it is just a flash, but I suck at actually 'making' them, i'm just the dummy in the back with the silly ideas lol.

Oct. 2, 2009 | 5:12 AM links5095 says:

this looks awesome and all but... will there be a new sinjid?

Oct. 29, 2009 | 1:32 AM Kira01 says:

The graphics are amazing. Reminds me of the Sonny series.
I'll be looking forward to playing Colony!

Nov. 12, 2009 | 7:27 PM SirCucumber says:

Hey..Hey Krin,
Can't you tell us when you're gonna submit your new game to Newgrounds?
I thought you were finished with it already, you know since you already submitted it to ArmorGames, or are you making more space on the multiplayer games?

P.S.
Hope you fixed that glitch on the right side of your game screen!

Nov. 18, 2009 | 11:16 PM IsaacKawasa says:

Looks like during the demo you (or the computer) spammed with infintry = /
That'll suck because it'll be like any other 2nd rate tactical game *cough* halo wars *cough*
And at first glance it did seem striking firmilier to Crimson Warfare

Nov. 24, 2009 | 9:10 PM EpicBoredom says:

You need to post more. You have more fans than you think.

So um, Sinjid. Though I'm still rank 5 in colony. Ah well.

I mean it took you a month to make colony, than what about Sinjid?
